AI accessibility is a UX opportunity, not a compliance checkbox

Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming part of everyday digital experiences. At Creed, our development teams are working on tools like chatbots, enhanced search, Generative Engine Optimization, and automated outreach systems. As these tools become more common, two questions matter more than any other: Who are we building them for, and what value are they actually bringing?

Accessibility is often framed as a compliance requirement. In reality, accessibility is a user experience issue, and with AI, it can determine whether a product actually works for the people it is meant to serve.

This perspective comes from UX, not from deep technical implementation. We are not diving into ARIA labels or heading structures here. Those details matter, and our developers handle them expertly. What matters in this conversation is what happens to real users when AI-driven experiences are not accessible, and how teams can catch issues before they become costly or exclusionary.

When AI fails, it is often a UX failure

Many AI initiatives struggle or stall. Sometimes this reflects the complexity of interconnected business systems, or real limitations in the technology itself. Just as often, though, the issue comes down to how well the user problem was understood in the first place.

Accessibility challenges are user experience challenges for people with specific needs. AI introduces new interaction patterns faster than most teams can fully test them, which means new UX problems appear before older ones are resolved.

When AI works well, it can dramatically improve access. Voice control enables people who cannot use traditional inputs to interact with devices. Real-time captioning allows conversations to be followed as they happen. Image and scene descriptions help people with vision loss navigate everyday tasks. Document summaries support users with cognitive load challenges.

These tools succeed because they begin with user needs, not with what the technology happens to make possible.

The risk of automating bias

AI also introduces new risks when it comes to accessibility and inclusion.

For example, AI-generated image descriptions can help people with vision loss understand visual content. That is a powerful use case. But studies of image recognition tools from major technology providers have shown consistent gender bias. Research analyzing Google, Microsoft, and Amazon’s platforms found that images of men were more often labeled with words like “official” and “businessperson,” while images of women were more likely to be described with words like “smile” and “hairstyle.” 

If the systems we build rely on AI-generated metadata, those biases become part of the product experience. Over time, they shape how users are represented, understood, and prioritized.

This highlights a core tension with AI. Automation can increase speed and scale, but human oversight is still required to catch gaps, correct bias, and make judgment calls that AI cannot make on its own.

Who gets excluded when AI does not work?

Speech recognition provides another clear example. A 2018 Washington Post investigation of major automated speech recognition systems showed significantly higher error rates for non-native speakers and people with accents. Accuracy drops even further for people with stutters, speech impediments, or conditions that affect speech clarity.

For many of these users, voice-based AI systems are not just frustrating. They are unusable. That means AI assistants, automated phone systems, and real-time captioning tools exclude the very people they often claim to help.

This raises an important design question: who is not just inconvenienced, but completely excluded, when a feature does not work as intended?

Accessibility breakdowns in real products

Accessibility gaps also appear in more subtle interaction details.

In one documented case, screen reader users tested AI chatbots across multiple websites. One chatbot worked smoothly for mouse users but created serious barriers for screen reader users. After sending a message, focus jumped back to the top of the page, forcing users to navigate through the entire layout again. In other cases, new chatbot messages were not announced at all, eliminating the benefit of instant responses. Sometimes, page content blended into the chatbot conversation, making it difficult to distinguish what was part of the chat versus the surrounding page.

From a UX perspective, the tool was effectively broken for these users.

As organizations in industries like insurance, healthcare, and nonprofit services adopt chatbots and AI-driven support tools, accessibility becomes non-negotiable. These systems often serve as the first point of contact, and when they fail, users may have no viable alternative.

The danger of testing only the happy path

Many accessibility issues emerge when teams only test ideal scenarios.

Another example comes from recommendation systems. In one case, users found that a recommendation algorithm treated closed captions as a content preference rather than as an access requirement. Instead of ensuring that all recommended content included captions, the system simply used caption usage to narrow suggestions.

That is not a small oversight. It reflects a misunderstanding of the user problem. If captions are required to access content, then availability should be guaranteed, not treated as optional.

Users with disabilities often surface these gaps first. They are not edge cases in the sense of being rare. They are edge cases in the sense that they expose whether a system truly understands its users.

What these failures tell us about design assumptions

Across these examples, the pattern is consistent.

Voice systems that only work with standard speech show a limited understanding of user input. Chatbots that require a mouse reveal assumptions about how people navigate. Search and recommendation systems that bury accessible options indicate a gap in understanding what users actually need to complete their task.

AI projects succeed when teams start with user needs and design outward from there.

  • Focus on solving real user problems rather than showcasing technology. 
  • Give users control over how and when AI is used. 
  • Always honest about limitations instead of overpromising. 
  • Provide clear fallback options when automation fails. 
  • Involve users, including users with disabilities, early and often in the design process.

Why agentic AI raises the stakes

As agentic AI becomes more common, these lessons become even more important. Agentic systems are designed to act autonomously on behalf of their human users and other systems, making decisions, taking actions, adapting to changes, and learning from outcomes to achieve specific goals.

In this context, accessibility failures carry more risk. Humans can notice when something is not working and adjust. Autonomous systems, by contrast, repeat the same mistake at scale until someone intervenes.

Consider a sales workflow powered by agentic AI that automatically sends emails with booking links. If the booking experience is inaccessible (perhaps it cannot be navigated by keyboard or read by screen readers), the system quietly excludes potential clients with disabilities at the very first interaction. The process is efficient, but it is also exclusionary by default.

Accessibility testing, in this context, is not just about meeting standards. It is quality control. It determines whether the system actually accomplishes its goal.

Building better AI experiences

Inclusive AI requires intentional oversight. While comprehensive accessibility testing may not be feasible for every project, there are practical steps teams can take. Basic keyboard testing and accessibility checklists can catch many issues early. For high-impact tools, especially those that affect large numbers of users, involving real users with disabilities in testing is critical.

Designing for edge cases leads to more resilient systems. When a tool works well for people with the greatest constraints, it works better for everyone.

So the question to ask is simple but essential: who can and cannot use this tool?

Accessibility is not just a compliance checkbox. It is a user experience issue that will determine whether AI-driven products succeed or fail.
