Creed Recommends

A revolution of the online type is underway.

Many companies spend a significant amount of effort establishing brand guidelines to ensure print communications deliver consistent results to consumers who are getting ever more sophisticated and demanding. This investment often leads to a sense of frustration when bringing the brand into the interactive space. You have to be online but but all those carefully chosen colors and fonts seem to go out the window.

Creed develops projects in both Flash and HTML (each of which provide different levels of control) so we are well aware of the struggle. That's why we were delighted to learn of a new effort to help make more high quality type available online.

The League of Movable Type has started an open source movement to help the web get over its dependence on Times and Arial. They have a great manifesto that has your best interests in mind. What does this mean for you? Well, while you may find that your corporate type face is not supported yet you now have a great reason to talk to the design firm that did your style guide or even contact the type foundry directly. Tell them you enthusiastically support the font(s) you use but need to use them online in text that helps your search engine results (i.e. creating graphics is not the solution) to be both competitive and on brand.

Speaking of type

When you start a new marketing project you may not know exactly what you want to say but you want to make sure you allow enough room to say it while your web site or brochure is being designed. The fastest way to hold your real estate while you hedge your bet is to fill the space with "Greek" (actually Latin and purportedly from a text written by Cicero in 45 B.C.) filler text called Lorem Ipsum. Lorem Ipsum gets its name from the first two words that appear which also let everyone know they are not looking at final copy. It's the photographic equivalent of "fpo" (for position only). The best resource for filler copy is flexible and free. Check out the Lorem Ipsum Generator.
